Buttermilk Biscuits

  • 3 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (plus extra)
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1-1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda


  1. Preheat oven to 425 F.
  2. Put self-rising flour into bowl.
  3. Slice butter into flour.
  4. Stir in buttermilk.
  5. Add additional all-purpose flour as needed to make a very soft dough that can be handled.
  6. Transfer dough to board sprinkled with all-purpose flour; knead a few times.
  7. Pat to 1/2 inch thick, and cut into circles.
  8. Place on oiled or greased cookie sheet.
  9. Bake until browned.
